What the Code Actually Says · Episode 03

Panel Workmanship & Torque

Clean isn't the same as legal.

The bottom line

A panel can look perfect and still fail inspection on one screw. "Neat and workmanlike" is enforceable (110.12), every cable needs its own connector, conductors need room to bend, and torque is a number — not a feel.

Code sections

NEC 110.12

Equipment shall be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner (2023 wording: "professional and skillful").

NEC 300.14

At least 6 in. of free conductor at each box; dressing starts with length.

NEC 312.6

Wire-bending space at terminals/cabinets per Table 312.6 — room to turn without strain.

NEC 312.5(C)

Each cable secured to the box — one cable per connector.

NEC 110.14(D)

Where a torque value is given, a calibrated torque tool shall be used. The breaker can't see a loose lug — it only counts current.

NEC 408.4(A)

Every circuit legibly identified as to purpose — not "Dave's room."

NEC 408.41

Each grounded conductor terminates in an individual terminal — one neutral, one hole.
